Document 1937 DOCN M94A1937 TI Ostracism of HIV positive people. DT 9412 AU Maladkar MN SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):417 (abstract no. PD0275). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370638 AB OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact and level of discrimination in HIV positive people. METHODS: Persons victimised of being HIV positive, previously working in factories/hospitals, their employers, HIV positive medical students and their relatives were contacted and interviewed. RESULTS: The stigma faced by HIV positive people was significant to cause deterioration in their quality of life. The discrimination had led them to financial crisis as well as emotional disturbances. The reasons for this discrimination was fear and ignorance on part of employers who were apprehended about their working capacity, transmission routes and image of the work place. Some of these persons were termed HIV positive only on ELISA without confirmation by Western Blot test. The social impact was tremendous to these individuals, some of whom have left their jobs, their studies, joining else where keeping their HIV positive status confidential and at same time denying themself much needed care. Some returned to their native place and died pathetically. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: This brings to my notice the need to check further victimisation to prevent fear of HIV/AIDS. And this calls for behavioural changes for a positive future.
